Artist Statement

I construct photographs depicting multiple realities that are not parallel or alternative worlds but surrogates for an unattainable truth. I am the unreliable narrator of my own story seeking perhaps a definition of my self. Different versions of facts undermine all certainty by providing the viewer with often contradictory accounts of my perceptions and memories.  In this enterprise the outside world becomes as susceptible to illusion as myself.  I aim for a cinematic quality where each element would be an actor in my austere stage-like spaces.

My background as a mathematician provides a counterpoint to my artistic narrative. Mathematics is the only place where truth can exist and everything else is subject to interpretation. Exactness plays a role also in my process: precise compositions and rigorous choice of materials support an ambiguous drift.

While I use a variety of media including photography, printmaking and digital drawing, is only in the book format where my story finds its wholeness. My process incorporates design, bookbinding and paper making.

My works often include texts: sometimes my own words, those of dead poets, and occasionally I collaborate with contemporary poets, writers who are my peers.

The modest scale of my work, the tactile nature of the handmade paper, the production of the prints, all contribute to convey an atmosphere of whispering conversations. Each of my books is an intimate celebration of the art of storytelling and craft. To open my artists' books is an invitation to come in and share secrets.
